Ao Oni (青鬼 Ao Oni) is a horror, mystery light novel written by Kenji Kuroda, illustrated by Karin Suzuragi and published by KADOKAWA on February 27th, 2013. The story is based on Version 3.0 of Ao Oni, focusing on Shun, a shy middle schooler who's become the target of bullying from the most popular kid in their class, Takuro, after losing his previous stress reliever, Naoki. There exists rumors of a monster roaming around an abandoned mansion known as Jailhouse, which inspires Shun to create a game based on the rumors; to his horror, his game seems to manifest into the real world.
The light novel is the first volume in the Middle School Edition, proceeded by Ao Oni: Vengeance.
Synopsis[]
Shun is the new kid in school, but he’s already managed to attract the attention of the school bully, who’s now making his life a living hell. It doesn’t seem like things could get any worse, until the night he finds himself and a group of his classmates inside a creepy, abandoned mansion known as the Jailhouse. They quickly start to hear strange sounds and see weird things, but everything escalates when they realize they can’t get out. Once they’re trapped inside, a blue, unnaturally large figure chases after them. Is it a new species? Or is it the ghost of their old classmate who died in an accident? Nobody knows, but one thing is for certain... If it catches them, they’re dead! The scariest game of tag in history begins!
Announcement[]
On the 28th of December, 2012, noprops announced via a blog post on MyNikki the production of an official Ao Oni novel written in Japanese. Similar announcements were made via Twitter and on the official website.
The novel became available for pre-order on the same day for ￥1,000 (approximately $11.62) and was released in early 2013. An official website for the novel was soon launched. Another site, used to sell various other merchandise for the series, was also released. This includes buttons, a book cover and the book itself. A promotional bookmark was available in certain Japanese bookstores.
Japanese hobby site AmiAmi sells an official book cover and clear file sets that feature art from the novel.

Main Characters[]
The protagonist. Just moved to town and started school in the third trimester as a transfer student. His hobby is programming computer games. Because of his introverted personality, he hasn't made many friends at school.
The smartest kid in class. Always wears his school uniform. Has a very serious personality, so he's a bit formal even with his peers. Believes anything unscientific is utter nonsense.
The class president and Shun's secret crush. Lost both of her parents in an accident at the end of last year, so she currently lives with her uncle's family. Her sixth sense seems to have gotten stronger after the accident.
A pretty girl in love with Takuro. She acts strong-willed and wild, but deep down inside, she's really lonely. Her pet cat, Heart, is her only comfort. A surprisingly fast runner.
Takuro's lackey. He talks big but is a huge Coward. He's especially afraid of ghosts and aliens, but it doesn't take much to set his knees knocking. His parents run a restaurant.
Everyone thinks he's a soccer-loving, straight-A student, but underneath that pretty face hides a cruel and brutal monster. An extreme narcissist, he's always checking his hair. His father is the president of a big company.
