Flying Oni (フライング鬼 Flying Oni) is a minor variant in the series. It first appeared in Version 3.0 in that version's Blueberry Farm, it would later take a major role in Forever as one of the main threats.
Appearance[]
Flying Oni's head bears the same appearance as The Oni's, but without a visible mouth, and featuring two differently sized thorn protrusions sticking out of its head from the right, and a single, darker wing to its left. Its body is a wobbly mess connected to the lower half of its head, with two antennae-like appendages hanging below its body.
It is noted in the novel's descriptions that it possesses a small mouth beneath its nose, which is not visible in the sprite or artwork.
Ao Oni (Game)[]
Version 3.0[]
Flying Oni appears in this version's Blueberry Farm, moving back and forth. It never gets to interact with the player, and is only ever seen facing sideways.
Ao Oni 2016[]
Flying Oni returns in Ao Oni 2016's Blueberry Farm alongside all other Onis from earlier versions. It acts identically to Version 3.0.
In this game's Comical Mode, Flying Oni can be found moving back and forth in the back of the library, and interacting with it during the final chase will teleport Hiroshi back to the right hallway.
Literature[]
Flying Oni appears exclusively in Forever, being of the main threats in this novel. It is first introduced after Hiroshi, Takeshi and Takuro enter the school, when Hiroshi spots a black swallow in a dark hallway, accidently scaring it away when he tries to take a better look.
A while later, Shun spots the same swallow, where it attempts to gobble up a blue bug. The bird appears disgusted and flies off. After, this swallow mutates into a Flying Oni. The avian is later seen flying around the courtyard by students, although none of them can tell what species it is.
During Takeshi and Naoki's confrontation, before either could see it coming, the avian strikes Takeshi's head and swiftly kills him, leaving Naoki in complete shock.
Along with Naoki and Blob Oni, Flying Oni appears in the rooftop confrontation against Hiroshi and Takuro. Using its great speed and unpredictability, it is able to make a lot of close calls against both boys. Before it is able to take out Hiroshi, Takuro protects him by putting himself in the way and taking the blow, barely surviving, and leaving Hiroshi hopeless. This would seal the fate for the swallow, however, as Fwuffy bursts out of the rooftop entrance and aims at the avian that hurt Takuro.
Fwuffy and the avian get into a fang fight, with Fwuffy successfully tearing the avian's head, but dropping dead due to fatal injuries inflicted by the bird. Ultimately, their bodies are both swallowed up by the ever-growing amoeba.
Outside Appearances[]
Flying Oni also appears in Ao Oni: The Blue Monster as a background character, where it appears as one of the many variants used for the Blueberry Farm in episode 3, crowd of spectators in episode 10, as well at the end of the outro.

Trivia[]
- Flying Oni is the only Oni variant in the novels to not belong to the Jailhouse, as it was a bird that nested near the school, and no other Flying Onis are implied to exist there.
- It is also the last Oni species introduced to be introduced in the novels.
- It is stated to be the only Oni that is capable of flying in the Guidebook, this is incorrect for the following reasons:
- The first novel had a Butterfly Oni, which appears as the center point of an artwork. However, it is a novel-exclusive Oni, and the Guidebook refers to the games only.
- The same version Flying Oni was introduced in, also features Clock Oni, an Oni that is visibly capable of floating. Strangely, it is the only game Oni absent from the Guidebook.
- Additionally, later games would introduce new flying Onis such as Bat Oni, taking away its title.
