The Jellyfish Oni (クラゲ鬼 Jellyfish Oni) is a major variant in the series. It first appeared in Version 3.0, then returned in Version 6.23, and has become a recurring species since.
Appearances[]
Jellyfish Oni shares the same appearance as Ao Oni's head, except that it is larger and is missing its lower jaw. Its cheeks are significantly extended on each side, and around 12~ tentacles attach themselves to its bottom side.
Ao Oni (Game)[]
Version 3.0[]
Jellyfish Oni debuts in Version 3.0, as part of this version's Blueberry Farm. It moves randomly in a high, frenetic speed.
Version 6.23[]
Jellyfish returns in Version 6.23 for this version's Blueberry Farm, with a different sprite, but functioning the exact way it did in its previous appearance. After the Hunchback Oni chase, it vanishes alongside the other Onis.
Ao Oni 2016[]
In Ao Oni 2016, Jellyfish reprises its role from Version 6.23.
In this version's Comical Mode, it moves back and forth in the japanese-style room, with Hiroshi mistaking it for a cleaning robot. During the final chase, when interacted with, it'll hold the chaser in place and spin it around, before it takes the robot down the hall and Hiroshi makes a run for it.
Additionally, a smaller version of it makes an appearance in the Sadako vs Kayako Mode, when Ao Oni gets the top of its head torn off after eating Sadako, it converts into a small Jellyfish Oni that chases Hiroshi and the others until reaching the front door. It moves in bursts and is faster than other Onis, but it moves rather stiffly and goes off the path at random.
Ao Oni (Mobile Remake)[]
In the Mobile Remake, Jellyfish Oni reprises its role from Version 6.23, however, instead of its previous behavior, it remains completely immobile. It is a 2-star mask, one of the few to not be downgraded.
Ao Oni (Steam Port)[]
In the Steam Port, Jellyfish Oni reprises its role from Version 6.23, lacking any additional content like its mobile counterpart.
Literature[]
Ao Oni (Novel)[]
Jellyfish Oni is never directly seen in any illustrations, but it is mentioned as one of the monster to be created from Ao Oni's flesh, more especifically its head. It's described as a mollusk-like creature (The common name of the phylum "Mollusca", which accounts for animals such as squids and octopuses), and is part of the final chase that Hiroshi and Shun go through in order to escape.
Ao Oni Mutation[]
Jellyfish Oni is featured as one of the Onis trapped inside the cell in the Annex Detachment, and alongside the rest of them, it breaks out after seeing Hiroshi. Ultimately, it ends up burning after Takeshi sets the place up in flames.
Ao Oni 2[]
Jellyfish Oni returns in Ao Oni 2, featured as a 2-star mask.
Main Story[]
Jellyfish Oni makes an appearance in this story's Blueberry Farm and its related chase, keeping a similar behavior to what it had in Version 3.0 and Version 6.23. It also appears in the final chase in one of the dead ends.
Other Scenarios[]
Jellyfish Oni is one of the Onis featured in an altar graphic that is both used in the main story and some scenarios like Takuro's scenario. In the Principal's scenario, Jellyfish Oni appears in that scenario's Blueberry Farm and subsequent chase.
Ao Oni 3[]
Jellyfish Oni returns in Ao Oni 3, as the same 2-star mask it was previously.
Jellyfish Oni is absent from the Main Story, only appearing as part of the same altar from Ao Oni 2. The same applies to Tetsuya's scenario.
In Takeshi's scenario, Jellyfish Oni appears as one of the Onis inside the pit Takeshi has to cross through. In Takuro's scenario, it appears as a death trap alongside other Onis if the player messes up the statues puzzle.
Ao Oni Online[]
Jellyfish Oni returned in Ao Oni Online on launch as a 2-stars mask, being one of the basic masks that can rarely replace the Ao Oni during a 100 Players game. It has also received tons of skins since launch, so many that it is difficult to document them all.
Ao Oni X[]
Jellyfish Oni is one of the few masks to return in Ao Oni X, keeping its 2-star rating.
If the player takes a wrong path inside the Mountains' labyrinth, the player will fall into a small area surrounded by Jellyfish Oni and other variants and receive a game over, but it can never interact with the player due to it being a cutscene.
If the player flips the lever in the Swamp without inputting the correct light sequence, it'll appear as part of an ambush to cause a game over. Like the previous game over cutscene, it can never interact with the player.
Outside Appearancess[]
Jellyfish Oni appears as a background Oni in Ao Oni: The Blue Monster, alongside other Onis. It can be found in the Blueberry Farm from episode 3, as part of the crowd of spectators in episode 10, and at the end of the outro.

Trivia[]
- In both iterations of its original sprite, as well as its scaled sprite from Ao Oni 2016, its tentacles glow for one of its frames. It is unknown if this is intentional or not.
