The Squatto Oni (スクワット鬼 Squat Oni) is a major variant in the series. It first appears in Version 3.0, and has taken the role of tertiary mascot of the series ever since Ao Oni: The Blue Monster.

Appearance[]

Squatto Oni shares the same face as Ao Oni's, however, it is twice as tall. Its shoulders and torso are thicker, while its legs and the remainer of its arms are longer.

A shadow covers a majority of its body, although what it covers is not consistent across poses and sprites, except for its shoulders and head, which are always visible.

Ao Oni (Game)[]

Version 3.0[]

After Hiroshi wakes up from his dream, thud sounds can be heard from outside. Entering the room where the sound comes from reveals Squatto Oni, crushing Mika by slamming his fists into the floor.

After a moment of staring, Squatto Oni starts chase. During its chase, it has a 3x3 range and is capable of opening the jail cell door.

It also returns in this version's Blueberry Farm with two instances of itself: One which idly squats at the back of the room, and another which attempts to reach out to the player from inside the cell.

Version 6.23[]

Squatto Oni returns in this version's Blueberry Farm, where it squats idly inside the jail cell. After Hunchback Oni's chase, it disappears alongside all other variants in the cell.

Ao Oni 2016[]

Squatto Oni reprises its role, as seen in Version 6.23.

In this game's Comical Mode, it is found next to Flat Oni in the kitchen, moving back and forth between the sink and a shelf. During the final chase, it, alongside the other Onis in the kitchen, ambush the chaser when any of them is interacted with. If the player interacted with Squatto Oni, it'll pick up the robot and throw it upwards, before bending down and hit the robot as it falls, and then slams it after the robot falls to the ground. Once the chosen attacker finishes their attack, it, alongside the others, turn to Hiroshi (If it was the attacker, it bends back up into idle position), causing him to run out of the kitchen.

Ao Oni (Mobile Remake / Steam Port)[]

Squatto Oni reprises its role in Version 6.23, without changes. In the Mobile Remake, it has a 2-star mask.

Ao Oni 2[]

In Ao Oni 2 and future mobile games, Squatto Oni appears as a 2-star mask.

Main Story[]

Squatto Oni appears in this scenario's Blueberry Farm and related chase. It also appears in the final chase in some of the dead ends.

Principal's Scenario[]

Squatto Oni appears in this scenario's Blueberry Farm and subsequent chase.

Later, a couple Squatto Onis can be found inside a blue-covered area, where they idly squat before standing up and moving sporadically. If the player grabs the key inside the room, they'll start chase and catch up to the player if they weren't able to close their individuals rooms

Other Scenarios[]

Squatto Oni is one of the Onis featured in an altar graphic that is both used in the main story and some scenarios like Takuro's scenario.

Ao Oni 3[]

Squatto Oni is absent from the Main Story, only appearing as part of the same altar from Ao Oni 2. The same applies to Tetsuya's scenario.

Tetsuya's Scenario[]

If the player offers a red stone to the altar, Squatto Oni, alongside Ao Oni and Fuwatty, appear and attack the player.

A couple Squatto Onis can be seen behind the cells in the basement idly squatting. It also appears at the end of the scenario, as part of the ambush, coming from the right door.

Other Scenarios[]

In Takeshi's scenario, Squatto Oni can be found inside the pit where Takeshi must balance to not fall into.

Ao Oni Online[]

Squatto Oni returned in Ao Oni Online on launch as a 2-stars mask, being one of the basic masks that can rarely replace the Ao Oni during a 100 Players game. It has also received tons of skins since launch, so many that it is difficult to document them all.

Ao Oni X[]

Squatto Oni is one of the few variants to retain its mask from prior games.

Main Story[]

If the player takes a wrong path inside the Mountains' labyrinth, the player will fall into a small area surrounded by Squatto Oni and other variants and receive a game over, but it can never interact with the player due to it being a cutscene.

If the player flips the lever in the Swamp without inputting the correct light sequence, it'll appear as part of an ambush to cause a game over. Like the previous game over cutscene, it can never interact with the player.

Other Scenarios[]

In Takuro's scenario, three Squatto Onis hatch from stone eggs during the initiation of the ritual, cornering Takuro and Pon-Chan. However, Pon-Chan distracts them, allowing Takuro to escape. By the time Takuro returns, they, alongside Pon-Chan, disappear.

Anime[]

Squatto Oni stars as part of a trio with Ao Oni and Fuwatty in the anime, although it appears in only 5 episodes. In the intro, it appears squatting in a Fuwatty to Squatto Oni pattern near the end of the outro.

Episode 3[]

Squatto Oni appears at the end of the episode, appearing from behind Mika and seemingly comforting her. Mika seems to fall for it, but before she can confess, Squatto Oni raises its arms and kill her, immediately causing a game over.

Episode 4[]

Squatto Oni is first seen during the Takuro barbeque in the Blueberry Farm, squatting. It is then seen outside while Ao Oni exercises, squatting. It is then seen as the Blueberry Farm falls asleep, where it squats before slowing down and sleeping.

Episode 11[]

Thanks to a domino effect from Takuro's blood, a bookshelf falls on its head while it is squatting, causing a lump to appears on its head. Mika takes note and laughes at its face, which causes it to throw a bowling ball at her, killing her, and continuing the sequence.

Episode 12[]

Squatto idly squats in the living room, with Ao Oni and Fuwatty nearby, until the sound of the front door opening followed by mysterious voices is heard, which startles all of them. As they wonder and worry about the intruders, Mika makes into their room, freaking them out as they run away from her.

Ao Oni finds a closet and gets them all to hide in, although the closet is noted as being too tight thanks to Squatto Oni's muscles. Shortly after entering, Fuwatty starts to shake, and although Squatto Oni attempts to calm it, Mika finds their hiding spot, with all of them freaking out.

After Mika kills Fuwatty and Ao Oni, Squatto Oni, with tears in its eyes, attempts to avenge the others by punching her, which is quickly shut down as Mika kills it with a flamethrower. As Takuro and the rest of the group arrives, Squatto Oni's charred body can be seen alongside Fuwatty and Ao Oni's bodies as the camera pans out.

Episode 13[]

Squatto Oni passed away during the 70 years the characters have stayed in the mention. It is not seen physically, but Ao Oni carries a portrait of it alongside an animation playing about its passing.

Trivia[]

  • "Squatto" was previously a fan name, with it originating from a famous Version 3.0 gameplay from two japanese NicoNico streamers, where they would yell "SQUATTO" (Squat) at the sight of said Ao Oni. This name would later be adopted as its official name as early as the Guidebook.
  • Interestingly, the back of Squatto Oni's head is visible, while Ao Oni's isn't.
  • Squatto Oni has no unique graphics for getting caught in a closet, meaning that getting caught in a closet during its chase will result in the same scene as getting caught by an Ao Oni.
  • Its head is smaller in its mobile sprites, which is not the case for its original depiction.
  • Squatto Oni and Hunchback Oni are the only variants found in Version 6.23 to be absent from the novels, as they are never depicted or noted to exist.
    • Due to the way Ao Onis in the novels are depicted, it is common for fans to mistake it with Squatto Oni.
  • In episode 13, although the portrait held by the old Ao Oni is supposed to be Squatto Oni, it instead depicts Ao Oni itself with its arms raised.
