The oni genre has spawned many games that are difficult to locate and play. Most of these games are Korean and currently have no public download links, although there are screenshots and videos of several. Most of these games were created in RPG XP and some feature Hiroshi as the main character, partaking in various adventures - but most games feature their own unique monster.

The oni genre has spawned many fan-made games. Most of these games were created in variants of the RPG Maker program, such as RPG Maker XP, VX or MV.

Ao Oni Fan-made Games
There are a variety of unofficial Ao Oni games. This title in misleading, because many of these versions are completely unrelated to the original Ao Oni game - the story, locations, characters, and even the monster may differ. All of these games, however, keep the same genre and were inspired by the original Ao Oni, making them part of the fanmade series. In most games, you explore and solve puzzles in a mansion haunted by the Oni .

Comical fan games and parodies of the Ao oni franchise are a popular trend in Korea. Many games are hastily or poorly made, and serve only as inside jokes or to poke fun at a celebrity or crossover. It is necessary to seperate low-quality games from games that can be appreciated for their story, characters, and good design.

First-tier games will include games that act as a standalone game and are generally well-made. These games fit within the genre of the original game, incorporating original characters, new puzzles, and oni chases.

Second-tier games will include games that are unfinished, glitched, or low-quality, but are still serious fan games that extend the oni game universe. These games could still stand as a playable game without the context provided by the original game.

Third-tier games includes all other games, including parodies, crossovers, tests, jokes, or games of low quality to the extent of unplayability.

First Tier
Games are presented here in alphabetical order. This list is not complete.

|description = A Japanese fangame that, while designed to be a parody, comes across as a comical and very well-made game. The game features four friends named Takuya, Ulrika, Takeshi and another character that resembles Takeshi's face from Ao Oni Version 5 assuming his name is also Takeshi. They enter a mansion and encounter a strange oversized man, which is from a bara manga.

Abe Oni was made in RPG VX and requires the appropriate RTP to play it. Your computer's locale must also be set to Japanese, not Korean or English.

|description = Oni Crossing is an English fanmade game released in October 2012. The game is a crossover between Ao oni and the Nintendo Animal Crossing franchise. You play as the ao oni and explore a town and countryside, meeting other onis and townspeople.

Many references to other fangames exist. The onis from Sooey Oni , Siro Oni , Golden Oni, and others can be found living in the town.

|description = Nolleooseyo Oni is a Korean fan-made game whose puzzles, mechanics, and locations are identical to Ao Oni Version 3 . The characters are the same (although have different pictures), but the mansion has been redesigned to look like a forest. A few new elements have been introduced, like rolling stones that can kill you.

The title Nolleooseyo Oni translates to "Please Come Over to Oni Forest." An additional oni statue near the entrance of the mansion offers a new twist. By talking to the statue, Hiroshi can engage in comical conversations about movies, fighting, and even access a store where every game item is obtainable for free.

Third Tier Games
Hundreds of Ao Oni games exist that are either poorly-made parodies of the game or are too short and devoid of content to be considered a playable game. The trend is popular across Korean Naver and Daum blogs, as well as the Korean indie game site Avangs. These games are too numerous to list here or provide information about, but an inexhaustive list can be made of games that are at least playable.

Revision as of 17:59, 11 September 2019

There are many different versions of the original Ao Oni game, all created by noprops (pixiv / twitter ). The original game was made in RPG Maker XP, a paid software for creating RPG games, and many fan versions also used this software for authenticity. You will need to download and install the Runtime Package (RTP) to play games made in RPG Maker XP. The Installation guide has more about this in detail.

The oni genre has spawned many fan-made games. Most of these games were created in variants of the RPG Maker program, such as RPG Maker XP, VX or MV.
